Bed Bugs

What are bed bugs?

They are small, brownish, wingless insects the size of an apple seed. They feed on human blood – just like mosquitoes. They crawl slowly and travel by hitchhiking on items such as clothing, luggage, backpacks, purses and furniture.

They do not transmit disease and not all people react to bed bug bites. However, bed bug bites can leave behind itchy, red welts which can cause pain and stress.

Where are bed bugs found?

Bed bugs can be difficult to detect because of their size and where they hide. They can hide in beds, couches, in electrical outlets,
cracks and crevices, around baseboards and even behind picture frames.

They are nocturnal and generally feed on people while they sleep. They are attracted to warmth, moisture and the carbon dioxide released when we exhale.

Bed bug feces leave dark stains that look like they were made with a fine tip marker. They can also leave blood spots, shed their skin and leave tiny pearl-white eggs the size of a pinhead.

What do I do if I have bed bugs?

They cannot be controlled effectively with do-it-yourself measures and in fact, this can make the problem worse.

Who is at risk of getting bed bugs?

You do not need to feel embarrassed about having them. This is not a reflection on who you are or where you live. They are not caused by sanitation problems, though clutter makes them harder to detect and treat.

How do I prevent bed bugs?

Be very cautious with second-hand items you bring into your home, such as books, electronics, clothing and furniture. Never take a mattress or sofa that was thrown away. You can also reduce places where they can hide by getting rid of clutter, vacuuming frequently, and washing and drying bedding and clothing.
